Anyone interested in playing a performance piece or two at the Boyne River Ukulele Strum and Picnic on Sunday, June 9 has been meeting at 6:30 upstairs at the gallery.

Lana has uploaded the changes for Make You Feel My Love to the drive. For those with print materials, "could" has been taken from the last verse of the song. A new copy of Grandpa Was a Carpenter in G has also been uploaded. I will add both to the blog. Lana also notes that on Moon River we end on C G C.

Although the park and school (backup for rain) has been booked since last June for our strum and picnic, Heather re-confirmed the bookings, and re-issued invitations to the Ukulele Club of Winnipeg, the Brandon Ukulele Club and the Prairie Strummers in Portage.

You can find out more on the Facebook event page shared to each club page and my own page. I will try and put up a few posters by the end of April as well.

Remember our blues workshop with Manitoba Hal Brolund at the gallery on Wednesday, June 5th during our regular strum time. The cost is $25/person with an overall cap of $300 courtesy of Manitoba Hal.

The group met upstairs at the gallery (this will be the regular meeting spot now).

Apparently from the notes I saw in response to Lana's note below, Lana did a great job conducting members in a new to us song, Today.

A note from Lana:

Sorry for the "conducting" last night, but "Today" is one of my all-time favourite songs by the New Christie Minstrels-- here is a link to the best rendition of this song-- ever (note the pause before... Today) LOL

Great strum last night.

Marge, Cathy, Louise, Lana, Barry, Ryan, Lori, Tom, Linda plus three guests attended.

Another great Wednesday evening with several guest performers.  Sorry I don't know the names of the three people that Lori introduced us to, but Ryan, Barry's grandson, played along-- loved Lynn's banjo uke.

We played two new songs.  I have updated the drive with Blue Eyes Cryin' in the Rain in the key of G and the new songs On top of Spaghetti and Relax Your Mind

Lynn, Louise, Linda, Lana, Lorna and Marge played a number of the old favourites along with newer songs like Purple Scarlet Robe, Ghost Riders in the Sky and The Old Log Train.  There were several songs chosen because we were thinking of Zenith and her early return to the group-- enjoy!

Please note that Lana fixed up Dream a Little Dream of Me and uploaded it and Wait So Long to the drive.  I have also added them to the blog. - H

Thelma, Lorna, Lynn, Barry, Linda and Lana attended.

Some of the songs we revisited were Flowers on the Wall, Song for a Winters Night, This Train, Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Where Have All the Flowers Gone aka Soldier song (ask orca), Leaving on a Jet Plane, I'll See You in my Dreams, Moon River, Love Potion #9, Save the Last Dance for Me, Unchained Melody. We did struggle at times without our Leader-- Louise, but we had a few laughs as well.

Here are some great resources on finger picking from Lana: - H

A decent article on learning the technique

Learning fingerpicking ukulele:

I like the progression that Guido follows-- one of my favourite teachers on the net

This is the guy who wrote Ukulele for Dummies

Mike Lynch is always good to watch and learn from-- I might start here---

There are others-- Stuart Fuchs, Aaron Kiem etc.  I have Aaron Keim's book that I will bring next Wednesday for anyone to borrow.

Once you get used to the Travis Pick, you can go to other patterns-- the one that is quite common is the "every other" pattern 4-2-3-1-4-2-3-1

Another is "outside-inside" 4-1-3-2-4-1-3-2

For Hallelujah I use  4-3-2-1-2-3-- the 4 is the beginning of the next measure

After you learn the basics of hand position and different patterns it's practice, practice, practice

Uke can do it!!

Note: I have added The Old Log Train to the blog. I have also added Lana's links to finger picking advice to our Practice Videos page. You can find the link on the sidebar. - Heather

Emerald Isle is coming along nicely.  We played Folsom Prison Blues and Louise provided the riff-- then we messed her up by changing it-- sorry Louise.  Did Judy really sound like Adele singing Make you Feel my Love?

It's been a long time since we did Wagon Wheel and Wildflowers-- they still sound great!

I will try to remember more of the songs next week, but I'd rather play ukulele than write song titles.

It took a lot of converting PDFs to jpegs and uploading and linking but I believe I finally have all of the songs on the drive on the blog under the Boyne River Ukulele Group link. Please let me know if/when you upload songs to the drive and I will convert and add them to the blog. I know most people use the drive but the iPad I use now is too old to link to the drive and some may have the same issues with their tablets. Just note that if you are using the blog you will need wi-fi access, data or a hotspot link.

UPDATE: Lana double checked for me and there were a few songs missing so I have added On the Road Again, Oh Susanna, Jolene, Silhouettes, This Train, and The Battle of Buster Scrubs. Also, if you have room on your tablet you can download the songs.
